The second most popular soft drink in South Africa* (after Coca-Cola), Fanta is
a core, premium brand of The Coca-Cola Company. A fruit-flavoured soft drink, Fanta
was created by the German Coca-Cola bottling company in Essen in 1940.
Coca-Cola purchased the brand in 1960. Today Fanta is available in 180 countries,
with a range of 115 flavours worldwide (most of them are only in some countries).
Overall, Fanta Orange remains the most popular Fanta flavour. Sold throughout Africa,
Fanta Orange represents about 80% of sales and has a solid fan base.
African consumers, particularly teens, associate Fanta with an attitude of playfulness,
humour and fun. This positive imagery is driven by the brand’s fun, playful and
wacky personality, which goes hand-in-hand with the bright colours, bold fruit taste
and tingly carbonation. In Fanta’s world, fun is guaranteed.
Complementing Fanta Orange is a range of flavours that bring local excitement and
variation to the brand. In South Africa, these include Grape, Pineapple and Strawberry.
Annual sponsorships are the MTV World Chart Express and VJ Search. There’s also
significant TV support.
